Sweet Heart is a piece about the ways that love transforms us. Featuring Dancer/Choreographer Areli Moran and Multi-Instrumentalist Ben Brown, Sweet Heart fuses live music and movement. Moran and Brown create a raw chemistry evoking Moran’s most intimate experiences with past lovers. There is an immediate rapport felt through the convergence of their two expressions; sound and shape, pulse and form, masculine and feminine. Moran’s sole prop, a collection of stuffed animals, are used to represent her different lovers. Opening and eating their hearts she embodies the affects of past lovers. The improvisatory nature of the performance allows Moran and Brown to react in real time and express their present feelings.

About the collaboration. In the first phase of this creation I worked on the piece without any specific music. In this second phase of the creation I invited Ben Brown to create an improvisation to the piece. The use of improvisation is instrumental in allowing the piece to breath and creating space for emotional and creative growth. Every time I open and eat the animals the resulting feeling is different. I realized that I needed to create a flexible framework to allow myself the creative freedom to feel the moment and let it drive true real feelings to the surface. During the first phase when the music stayed the same I found the piece losing the real time feeling and the invitation to be in the moment.
