Background / ThisPlace Artists’ Talk
Artists Emilio Rojas, Igor Santizo, and Guadalupe Martinez close out the series of events that accompany Background / This Place at grunt with an artist talk and potluck
Following the official opening on May 10 2013, as well as various talks and walks to accompany the exhibition, artists Emilio Rojas, Guadalupe Martinez, and Igor Santizo held a talk/panel/Q&A on a Saturday afternoon at grunt gallery.
This talk gave the audience an opportunity to hear about, ask about, and begin to understand the density of the project, Background / This Place, which revisits ideas about Vancouver’s identity and history started 40 years earlier by artists Michael de Courcy with Taki Bluesinger, Gerry Gilbert, and Glenn Lewis.
It was revealed that the artists have been working on this since 2012, when they retraced sections of the original artists’ walks, in which the physical exhaustion helped them realize they had only touched the surface of this project.
Hours of video footage, hundreds if not thousands of archival slides, as well as the centrepiece: a massive reversed & inverted collaged map of Vancouver were the culmination of their work. But it is not over: an expansion on the web portion of this project is still underway.
