The Lido is a boon in the residential desert of East Broadway between Fraser and Clark. On a typical Monday it can be difficult to find a good bar, let alone one featuring free jazz, original visuals and a cozy, sociable atmosphere.

This month The Lido in collaboration with Sick Boss is reviving the  Sick Boss Mondays series. Sick Boss trio (Cole Schmidt, James Meger and Dan Gaucher) will welcome guest musicians every Monday for the month of January. The performances will be accompanied by live analog visuals by Matt Krysko, owner of The Lido.

This is an exercise in breaking up the well-loved but highly incestuous Jazz scene of the GVA and getting down to the bare bones of nu jazz, fresh sound. This innovative jazz series brings texture and warmth to the mild Vancouver winter, and entices people to break it down on otherwise tame Monday nights. Forget those winter blues and come support live collaboration in a fly venue.

The photographs in this article are from January 12th, featuring the trio with guest musicians Simon Millerd from Montreal on trumpet and LA’s Neelamjit Dhillon on alto saxophone. Unless otherwise indicated, the Sick Boss trio is Cole Schmidt (Pugs and Crows) on guitar, James Meger (Braveheart) on acoustic and electric bass, and Dan Gaucher (Fond of Tigers) on drums.

Sick Boss Mondays is held every Monday night in January at The Lido, with music starting at 9pm. Refer to the Facebook event page for full lineups and more info.
